Windows Registry

Thursday, November 22nd, 2007

The Registry is one of Windows’ most powerful, crucial and sensitive components. For this reason, novices as well as experienced users tend to distance themselves from it. Most information or documentation concerning the Windows Registry often includes a preface warning users to practice extreme caution when even examining it, and especially when editing to it. Why does this particular piece of the Windows operating system cause users so much anxiety? What does the Registry actually do, why is it essential to the functionality of our systems, and how can we avoid the dangers associated with it?

What is the Windows Registry?

The Windows Registry is a central hierarchical database used to store information and settings for users, applications and hardware devices. It contains information that applications and system processes constantly retrieve and store during operation, such as a profile of user’s custom configurations, the types of documents that applications can open and create, as well as the hardware and network ports that exist and are being used.

Every application, device and even the operating system itself relies on the Registry to run processes, save information and interact with any other part of the system. You cannot boot Windows, launch your favorite game, or print a document without referencing the Registry. Similarly, every time a user changes a setting, switches the Desktop background or screen saver, or installs a new program, the Registry changes. Whenever a user modifies any Control Panel settings, file associations or installed software, the changes are reflected and stored in the Registry.

There are a number of distinct advantages and disadvantages in storing system settings in the Registry. One the advantages of the Windows Registry’s hierarchical organization is that it keeps the fundamental machine configuration somewhat separate from individual users’ configurations. When a users logs into their computer, the user-specific Registry settings are loaded from a different location than where the system-wide settings are stored. While user-specific settings are stored in a different location, users still have access to sensitive, machine-wide data.
